THE CONCEPT

In 1963, the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum) in California hosted a landmark exhibition. This retrospective of Duchamp's work marked the first of its scale, becoming the largest to date upon its unveiling. Curated by Walter Hopps, it stood out as one of his most notable projects in the museum's history. Duchamp's active participation extended to designing the exhibition's publication, which served as an early form of catalog raisonné. It encompassed a comprehensive chronology and indexes detailing the various phases of his profoundly influential artistic career.
